A
project sponsored by WFE and undertaken by 7 young African American
male teens, exploring the cultural and educational importance of
the hood. The publication of this book will create a scholarship
fund for these 7 young men. Their work was documented by Rocky Mountain
News reporer Tina Giego.

of Coloring Book - ABCs of Denver
|

The
coloring book was created by three DPS students and the illustrations
feature Denver's landmarks and businesses. A portion of the purchase
of each book will be placed in a scholarship fund to benefit the
three student creators as they continue to pursue their academic
goals beyond high school.

WFE
donated seed money to begin building the Center for Excellence in
Early Childhood Education. The project was proposed by Mayor Hickenlooper
during his campaign. This project benefits the entire ECE community
in our region by offering a model for best practices and a training
center that will provide associates and bachelor degrees in ECE
to child care professionals.

Provided
$65,000 worth of merchandise to Denver Health through partnerships
with Gold Bug and Boppy companies. Why did we choose Denver Health?
They provided $240 million in care for the uninsured in 2003; Nearly
4,000 new babies are born at Denver Health each year; 90% are living
well below the poverty level. Denver Health provides all supplies
for 75 new moms each week.

of Lunch Forums Addressing Special Needs of Students of Color |

Members
of the first forum panel were Kevin Patterson, Denver School Board;
Rico Munn, State School Board; Peter Groff, CO State Senator; Michael
Hancock, Denver City Council; Richard Smith, Assistant Superintendent,
NE Quadrant for DPS. The event was moderated by Elbra Wedgeworth,
President of Denver City Council.

Why
Family Star? Family Star is an Early Childhood Education center
based in NW Denver - it has a predominantly Head Start population
- meaning families at or below poverty level benefit from underwritten
Early Childhood Education. Their mission statement says "Family
Star believes in transformation through education that empowers
by developing the potential of people of all ages to think for themselves,
to do for themselves and to create better lives."

DPS students from around the city focused on adolescent obesity
while at the same time learning about nutrition issues in Ethiopia
and other third world countries where adequater nutrition is an
issue - WFE supported the kids in raising over $10,000. half of
this money went to Project Mercy in Ethiopia; from theother half
a majority went to programs of Summer Scholars - some to the English
as a Second Language program.

| Homeless
Student Project Underway |
|
The
goal of the homeless project is to publish a book underscoring the
experiences of homeless kids as compared to kids with homes and
the challenges this presents for them as students. The project will
benegit WFE, the Homelessness Commission of Denver, and EMO, and
organization utilizing photography as an educational tool.
